Large file uploads

OLEFA offers file uploads on many places (e.g. the resources manager, directly inside the collaboration tools, directly in a database record…), and contains many mechanisms to simplify the upload, such as
  • upload of single and multiple files by drag&drop
  • upload of single and multiple files by a selection button (also optimized for tablets)
  • automatic image compression before the actual upload
  • automatic image rotation according to its exif information (stored by many cameras according to how you held it when you took the photo)
  • automatic video conversion after the upload to ensure a plugin free video integration in all modern browsers

However, in order to protect the server stability, these upload mechanisms are often limited to a maximum size per file.

If you need to upload large files, here are some hints for you:

How to compress video files

Often, video files can be very large, and it may be a good idea to compress them to a lower quality before uploading them to your website. Besides the fact that this may enable you to upload them easily by the regular upload procedures, this will also help you to save disc space on your webserver:

Instructions for uploading large files via FTP

Step 1: FTP upload into a temporary folder

Go to the administration area of your site and access the section "Website > Resources" from within this interface.

(Note: You need an administrator account in order to access this interface. If you have a regular user account, please contact an administrator of your website in order to handle the FTP upload.)

You'll find an FTP username and password in the orange info-box.

Now use an FTP client (e.g. Cyberduck, cyberduck.softonic.de) and connect to the server by using the specified username and password. Now you can upload your files by the FTP client, which will be stored in a temporary import folder.

(Note: Please ensure that your filenames don't contain any special characters, such as spaces, brackets, commas, semicolons… and no umlauts, such as öäüßç. Filenames must consist exclusively of letters, digits and underscores.)

Step 2: Move the files to the resources manager of your website

Access the resources manager. Create or open a directory into which you want to permanently store the files.

Now open the top-bar menu "options" and select "import".

You now see a list of files that are inside the temporary import folder. Check the files that you want to import. They are now moved into the resources manager of your website.

Step 3: Use the files on the website

Access the tool where you want to use the file(s) (e.g. wiki, webbook, a news entry…) and select them from the resources.

Alternative: import the files from a cloud service

OLEFA also offers the possibility to import files directly from specific cloud services. This import is not limited to the file size specified for uploads. (However, the import could still be interrupted for very large file sizes due to a timeout.)
